Peter McDonald

Healthcare Estates is delighted to announce Peter McDonald as the After Dinner Speaker.

Peter McDonald has been a Consultant General Surgeon at Northwick Park and St. Mark’s (NPM) since 1991. He is a gastrointestinal surgeon with a special interest in coloproctology, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia surgery, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, paediatric general surgery and emergency gastrointestinal surgery. His clinical research interests have included cancer, Crohn’s Disease and proctological conditions. He is Chairman of the Medical Staff Committee at NPM and Sub-Dean at St. Mark’s Hospital. He has been Honorary Editor of the Royal Society of Medicine and a past Hon. Secretary of the Section of Surgery at the RSM. He writes, speaks and broadcasts extensively about many topics and can often be heard on BBC Radio 4.

Peter has published a novel and is the author of the “Oxford Dictionary of Medical Quotations”. Peter’s after dinner speech is titled JIBLETS AND TRIPE – the lighter side of being a surgeon! Being a bowel surgeon he has a well developed sense of humour that gives his audience a glimpse into both the lighter and, occasionally, more serious side of being a consultant surgeon.

Over the last decade, Peter has talked at hundreds of events and never fails to get his audience laughing as well as giving them an insight into the work of a surgeon working in the NHS. In thirty minutes of witty anecdotes and stories Peter will confirm that humour is the best medicine and that Voltaire was right when he wrote that “the purpose of medicine is to amuse while nature takes its course”!
