The New Hospital Programme single-bedroom prototype is a full-scale, low-fidelity mock-up of a standard in-patient ensuite room, including the adjacent corridor. Developed with REDS10* and based on designs from our clinical and technical experts, it provides a controlled environment to test the most efficient ways to build, maintain, and operate hospital spaces, while ensuring they meet the clinical needs of patients and staff.

This prototyping approach is integral to the Hospital 2.0 methodology, enabling iterative refinement of design to optimise patient safety, reduce infection risk, and support reduced length of stay. By building a prototype, NHP can bring together multiple disciplines — clinical, estates, digital, and patient representatives — to test workflows, technology integration, and overall user experience.

Prototyping also reduces construction risk. A controlled mock-up environment allows teams to understand how the room will come together and resolve potential issues before work begins on a live site. This process reduces the likelihood of costly errors, improves efficiency, and supports safer project delivery.

ℹ️ The prototype will be located inside the Exhibition Hall at Manchester Central, and the NHP team will be running a series of engagement sessions across the two days of Healthcare Estates, to present the prototype and gather feedback from different stakeholder groups – including open sessions each day which all attendees have the opportunity to book onto (subject to availability).
