Healthcare Estates 2019 – Review
With an abundance of activities during this year’s Healthcare Estates in Manchester, including IFHE representatives from all over the world attending over 4 days; the 2019 Healthcare Estates event saw a record attendance at the exhibition, conference and the annual dinner.
Over 250 exhibiting companies saw over 4,800 attendees in two frantic days in Manchester with Keynote presentations from Simon Stevens, Chief Executive Officer of NHS Improvement, which leads the NHS’ work nationally to improve health and ensure high quality care for all. As the NHS Accounting Officer he is also accountable to Parliament for over £100 billion of annual Health Service funding; Simon Corben Director and Head of Profession NHS Estates and Facilities, NHS England and NHS Improvement and a moving presentation from Sally Becker, known as the Angel of Mostar, on her moving experiences in Bosnia and Syria saving the lives of women and children in the war-torn region the new air dome feature on the exhibition floor was packed with delegates throughout the two days.
Exhibitors enjoyed two days of busy isles and full days of meetings and networking as a record 4,800 attendees ensured this year’s event was the busiest yet. Steve Webb, Show Director commented – ‘we had a record 650 delegates to the event with most attending for 2 days, up from 495 last year. A similar number attended the dinner on the Tuesday night, which was held at Manchester central for the very first time’. Steve comments – there are very few venues able to cope with this level of dinner guests and Manchester Central proved to be an ideal, if not last-minute choice of venue which worked perfectly.
Webb also commented, ‘The exhibition area really benefitted from the new layout, the keynote theatre on the exhibition floor and improved features, at times it was so busy you could scarcely move in the isles’.
Exhibitors were also full of praise for the event, many already reserving their place at the 2020 event.

The awards dinner at Manchester Central was sold out with 650 guests, entertained by the harmonious ‘Do your Thing’ a Salford and Tameside based Choir and humorous after dinner speaker Peter McDonald who is a Consultant General Surgeon at Northwick Park and St. Mark’s (NPM) since 1991. He is a gastrointestinal surgeon with a special interest in coloproctology, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia surgery, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, paediatric general surgery and emergency gastrointestinal surgery, and made for a most enjoyable evening, leading to the awards when Andy Wavell very deservedly received this year’s Life Time achievement honours and we saw the second IHEEM Apprentice of the Year awarded to Thomas Bennett, from South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust who attended with his very proud Grandad. The highly commended entrant was Matthew Davison of QE Facilities
The dinner raised £3650 for CentrePoint, this year’s nominated IHEEM charity. CentrePoint is the UK’S leading Youth homelessness Charity. Over the last 50 years, thanks to our supporters we’ve been there for thousands of homeless young people when they had nowhere else to turn.
Further innovations and improvements are promised over the coming months for the 2020 event, with a new venue for the dinner this year and a larger exhibition, Healthcare Estates is now the premier event for all trusts and the estates and facilities teams.
