Labour Life Peer, Anthony Young, The Lord Young of Norwood Green, a prominent apprenticeship ambassador, previous General Secretary of the National Communications Union, and Governor of the BBC, and Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Sustainable Buildings at the University of Cambridge, will be among the keynote speakers for IHEEM’s Healthcare Estates Digital Week next month. The programme of online events takes place from 5-9 October, with the speaker line-up now taking shape. Dr Fitzgerald is a member of the SAGE Environmental Modelling Group, and a lead author of the CIBSE COVID-19 Ventilation Guidance. He founded and led Breathing Buildings, a spin-out from Cambridge University which is ‘a leader in hybrid ventilation systems.’ He has provided ventilation design advice for many buildings within healthcare and beyond, both in the UK and in countries with ‘a more continental-type climate’. In his online presentation, ‘Ventilation in a post-COVID world’, he will discuss how the importance of adequate ventilation for health and safety has been heightened as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. He said: “One of the recommended mitigation measures is the provision of plentiful amounts of fresh air to buildings to help dilute any airborne pathogens. It is easier to achieve this in temperate weather, but there are challenges as to how buildings should be designed and operated to cope in high and low temperature conditions. We will discuss the importance of, and practical ways to ensure, provision of adequate amounts of fresh air, while also considering the capital and energy costs of doing so.” Other keynote speakers at Healthcare Estates Digital Week will include: Simon Corben, Director and Head of Profession: NHS Estates & Facilities, NHS England & Improvement; Fiona Daly, Sustainability & EFM Workforce Lead, NHS England & Improvement.
Themes each day are: ‘National Policy’, ‘Science and Technology’, ‘Workforce’, ‘Healthcare Design’, and ‘International’, plus a wide range of daily live and on-demand webinars and presentations from a variety of Company Affiliates and IHEEM members, including medical architect, Dr Evangelia Chrysikou, Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at The Bartlett Real Estate Institute UCL, and Programme Director of the MSc Healthcare Facilities course there, Mike Ralph BEng, CEng, FIHEEM, Principal Engineer & Senior Policy/Strategy lead (Hard FM) at NHSE&I, and Ian Sandford BEng, CEng, MCIBSE, FIHEEM, (AE) Medical Gas.
