Project Halo, Delivering a New Pathology Mode

Health Services Laboratories (HSL) is a joint venture company, consisting of The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and the Royal Free London Hospital. Project Halo forms HSLs central pathology hub, located in central London on Euston Road near Kings Cross. Operationally it is linked to Rapid Response Labs within UCLH, Royal Free and TDL. The joint venture also sells services to other Trusts not part of the joint venture company.

Halo is located in a fully refurbished and expanded mid- 20th Century building. The structure comprises 11 storeys above ground and five basements arranged as split levels. All floors are designed on a standard module to maximise future flexibility. The ground floor includes dining and meeting facilities to promote interdisciplinary collaboration.

SBA was involved in this project from its inception, working closely with the client in refining the brief in light of the constraints imposed by the existing building.

The project incorporates an extensive robotic tracking system over four levels in an automated lab. This scope of this system is unique in the UK. Pathology services include Haematology and Biochemistry, PCR (blood and non-blood), Microbiology, Immunochemistry and Cellular Pathology. The HSL business offices are located on the top 3 floors but designed to expand laboratory services. In addition one of the UKs largest Genetics Lab is located in the building.

The overall design objectives included:

• Create a laboratory environment that promotes innovation and collaboration
• Avoid inflexible laboratory space, grouping shared resources in central areas
• Develop an environment able to respond to developments such as Computational Pathology
• Attract the best the brightest by creating high quality interior workplaces
• Reflect corporate identity throughout

The project was completed in March 2017 and is now fully operational, lessons learned will be part of the presentation.
