John Simpson

Freelance, Ex-Estates and Facilities Director, Royal Stoke University Hospital


John has recently retired from the post of Director of Estates and Facilities management at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust having successfully led the merger of  the former Mid Staffs Foundation Trust and University Hospitals North Staffordshire. John previously held the same position at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust where his position included responsibility for all aspects of Estate and Facilities Management services, capital investment and non-clinical service delivery.

He has over 30 years’ experience of Estates and Facilities Management in both the public and private sector.

Prior to joining NUH in 2007, John was Director of Estates and Management at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  John has now led on the successful merger of the Estates and Facilities Management functions at three of the country’s largest university teaching hospitals.  He also has experience of the FT Process and contributed to Sheffield’s successful FT application.

John has experience of the private sector, having trained and worked in the heavy engineering and manufacturing industry at GEC.  John also worked in the Financial Services sector at Barclays Bank where he was responsible for the continuous availability of the critical engineering infrastructure to support the bank’s worldwide systems.
